NICU Friend Visits and Kellen One Liners

It’s been another good week for the M family.

Owen got to play with two of his NICU Nursery 2 friends. Tuesday we went back to Como and had a picnic with Joanna (the August hero) and Isaiah. It’s been a few months since they last saw each other and this was the first time they were both mobile. Neither ever got mad at each other, but they always seemed to want to play only with the toy the other had. Isaiah, who is typically very pacifier particular, even gave Owen’s “off brand” pacifier a try. It was funny to watch them “play”, I think the two will keep Joanna and I busy on our visits. Saturday we had another of the Nursery 2 friends to our house for a visit. It was the first visit since the NICU days and it was really fun to see the two together. These two were truly in the trenches together – they were born 5 days apart – and they seemed to have a special intrigue in each other. I’m no match maker, but she just may be Owen’s first girlfriend. Kellen also seemed smitten by big sister. He ran outside and came back in to present her with a dandelion.

Last week was Kellen’s last week of summer school at St. David’s. Owen and I joined him for his classes picnic lunch on Friday. I don’t know how his teachers do their job. There were three year old’s everywhere, but they always seemed to know where the kids were. Kellen starts up the official school year after the holiday weekend. Fortunately for us, he will have the same teacher again. We’re feeling pretty lucky to have had the same teacher for three years in a row. Having that consistency at school has been so helpful for Kellen and he and teacher Elizabeth have a great relationship.

In many ways, Kyle and I are convinced that the 3’s make the 2’s seem like a piece of cake, but Kellen makes up for the hard 3-year-old moments by his warm hugs and the hilarious things that come out of his mouth. I had to share a few from this week.

– Kellen’s middle name is Robert. Apparently he’s learned that middle names are for parents to let their kids know they are in trouble. This weekend he got mad at me and said, “Stop that, Mommy Robert!”
– Sometimes when I change Owen’s diaper, I’ll gently pat his clean behind and say, “such a cute little rump”. This weekend as Kellen watched me change his brother, he used my same tone of voice as he said, “such a cute little penis”. I will just die if he ever says that in public!
– We have made a little progress on swearing, which is good, because I’ve made very little progress on not laughing. At dinner on Sunday, Kellen’s suggestion is that he now say, “Oh Muffin Man”. We assured him that that was a fabulous alternative. Only problem is, now we’re going to have to start saying “Muffin Man”.

Check out how well Owen’s doing on his medication reduction! This gives me about 1/2 hour back to my day.

  1. It is so inspiring to see Owen moving and grooving. Keep practicing little man! You will get there! Then watch out Kellen! Your toys will not be safe. I completely agree that the threes are more challenging than twos. We are also working on the swearing with Cedric. Our alternate is coconuts (from Jake and the Neverland pirates), but yes we have to remember to say it too.

    • Jenn, It’s probably best that Kellen and Cedric live so far apart with both of them being little sailors! 🙂 Thanks for saying hi, we miss you!
